Local couple bikes to Florida
Mark and Sandi Remson recently took a biking trip from Gatesville, Texas, to Naples, Florida. The length of the trip was a total of 1,870 miles and lasted 45 days altogether, accommodating for bad weather along the way.
The couple said they biked about 50 miles per day at an average speed of 10-15 mph, encountering everything from bicycle mishaps to being chased by dogs. The goal was to dip their front tires in the Pacific Ocean and their back tires in the Atlantic Ocean. Because they started their trip in Texas though, they instead opted for dipping their front tires in a pond on their land.
The Remsons packed only what they needed for the trip and as much as they could carry comfortably. This included having two sets of clothes each, rain and cold weather gear, snacks and drinks, safety gear and anything that would be needed for bike repairs. Additionally, because most states don’t allow bicyclists to ride on the interstate, the couple used six different bike traveling maps created by the Adventure Cycling Association to help them get from Texas to Florida in the quickest and least strenuous routes.
“The hardest part was leaving home,” said Sandi. “You don’t know whether you can do it, what to expect.”
