Lady Hornets clinch playoff berth

Posted

The Gatesville Lady Hornets soccer team clinched a playoff berth with a 2-0 District 18-4A victory over the Lampasas Lady Badgers on March 4 at Lampasas High School.

The 9-4 Lady Hornets did what they had to do to lock up the playoff spot against a district foe considered to be a rival in many sports. Andrea Ortiz and Mikala Bryson scored the goals for Gatesville.

The Lady Hornets played the Academy Lady Bumblebees (0-13 in district) on March 4, and crushed them 10-1, also at Tommy Davidson Field at McKamie Stadium.

Tasha Thoms and Payton Armstrong led the way with two goals each, while Andrea Ortiz, Mikala Bryson, Grace Penrod, Cayleigh Coursey, Rachel Conner, and Bethany Penrod each scored one goal.

GHS boys and girls head soccer coach Scott Campbell said that the progression of the team this year has been a huge highlight of the success of the Lady Hornets.

“They have just a really good chemistry,” Campbell said. “We’ve got four seniors that are great leaders. And the younger girls are progressing and developing. That’s probably the biggest highlight, just watching everybody develop.”

The Lady Hornets have their sights aimed next at the Lake Belton Lady Broncos (13-0 in district), the leader of the pack in District 18.

According to Campbell, that district battle will be a “bonus playoff game” because the Lady Broncos are a playoff-caliber team. This game will be ideal for the Lady Hornets because they can figure out what kind of adjustments are needed going into the bi-district round of the playoffs.

The Lady Hornets closed the regular season against the Lady Broncos at Lake Belton High School.

GHS BOYS

The Gatesville Hornets boys soccer team defeated the Academy Bumblebees by a 1-0 count in a District 18-4A contest at Tommy Davidson Field at McKamie Stadium.

The Hornets (8-5 in district) came into the game off a 2-0 loss to the Lampasas Badgers (3-10 in district) on March 4. But against the Bumblebees, the Hornets were able to secure the win with a Hector Silva Hernandez goal to put them on top.

“I saw a tremendous amount of energy, which was great,” GHS coach Campbell said. “It wasn’t a clean game by any means, but we had some great opportunities.”

The Hornets are looking to find out where they are in the playoffs on Friday night and are hoping to secure a win against Lake Belton in their regular-season finale.

The Hornets traveled to Lake Belton High School to take on the Broncos, a District 18 team that they defeated earlier in the season on penalty kicks, 7-6.
