Billy Wayne Massingill has stepped in as the varsity girls head basketball coach at Jonesboro High School.

This is his 11th year to coach in Jonesboro in two different stints.

The Jonesboro Eagles dropped their season opener at Clifton Tuesday, but Massingill expects the team to battle this year.

Senior Katie Snoddy scored 17 points and junior Alissa Shumate added 15 points for the Eagles in the opener.

Jonesboro returns to the court Tuesday with a game at Walnut Springs.

Massingill said the team will have to rely on solid defense and he expects to raise the intensity.

“We’ll be a team that plays hard,’’ he said. “They’ll work at getting better and better.’’

The Eagles new head coach has more than 20 years experience, all in Central Texas.

He is a 1973 graduate of Evant High School.
