JISD police department takes step forward
The formation of the Jonesboro Independent School District’s (JISD) on-campus police department took a major step forward this week as the Coryell County Commissioner’s Court approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office and JISD that provides commitment from the sheriff’s office for the school district’s plan to form an on-campus police department.
The memorandum is required for JISD to comply with requirements of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) before the state agency will commission the department.
According to JISD Superintendent Matt Dossey, plans to create an on-campus police department began last summer when the JISD Board of Trustees approved creating an on-campus PD.
Dossey said “the paperwork process” of seeking the TCOLE commission is almost complete and he is expecting an on-site TCOLE inspection in May or June. Dossey hopes that the department will be fully functional by the start of school in August.
Unlike the plan recently approved between the City of Gatesville and the Gatesville Independent School District where additional school resource officers will be hired by the Gatesville Police Department and assigned to GISD campuses, Jonesboro will hire a police chief that will office oncampus and report directly to the superintendent.
