Inside Coryell County Jail

Coryell County Sheriff Scott Williams stands inside of a trustee’s cell at the Coryell County jail Monday morning. Overcrowding and the need to house inmates out of county has accelerated the push for a larger jail facility.

Jail committee to present plan Oct. 28

As jail woes continue to plague Coryell County, the Commissioners’ Court-appointed committee working on the feasibility of a new $18 million jail facility will present their plans in public later this month.

The committee, comprised of Precinct 1 Commissioner Kyle Matthews, Precinct 4 Commissioner Ray Ashby and Sheriff Scott Williams, has met with infrastructure engineers to ensure water and septic systems at the planned construction site would be adequate to support the facility and received plans from a jail architect.

Committee members plan to unveil preliminary plans Oct. 28 at the regularly scheduled 9 a.m. commissioners’ court meeting, and hopefully, receive a vote to proceed.
