Introduction of the new sportswriter

Posted

Hello, I am Triston McGehee, and I am the new sportswriter for the Gatesville Messenger. At the age of 22, I am very grateful to receive this opportunity, and I want to share a little bit about myself so that the community can become more acquainted with me.

From an early age, I have always liked sports. And I have always considered it a fun way to engage with my family. I support the Dallas Cowboys football team because they have always been a family favorite. In other sports, I do not have a preference. I just like to see a good game.

My path began in the small Central Texas town of San Saba, where I spent my entire childhood. Once I finished high school in May 2018, I wanted to pursue a degree in communication. This endeavor led me to spend my first year at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. At Sul Ross, I was an athletics department student worker. This position helped me find a passion for sports, and it gave me experience filming basketball games.

After two semesters at Sul Ross, I transferred to Tarleton State University in the fall of 2019 to continue working toward my degree. I will graduate from Tarleton in the spring of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in communication.

During my studies at Tarleton, I stumbled upon an internship opportunity with the Hood County News in Granbury. I was very interested in the opportunity because I wanted to explore community journalism.

Since then, I have written various features and covered football in Hood County. And now, at the Gatesville Messenger, I look forward to covering local sports with pride, and I hope to meet new people across Coryell County.
