March 8 was a cold night for baseball, but that did not stop the Gatesville Hornets from shutting out the Lampasas Badgers, 10-0, in their District 6-4A contest at Danny Loerwald Field at Ryan Powell Memorial Ballpark.

The Hornets were ecstatic to start district play with a mercy-rule win over the Badgers. The Hornets improved their overall record to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in district with their overwhelming victory.

GHS head coach Chase Smith shared the key to victory for the Hornets.

“We didn’t beat ourselves; we threw strikes,” Smith said. “That is the key to our success. Every time we haven’t made errors and had walks. We have gotten wins, and every time that we haven’t, it has gone the other way.”

The Hornets are heading into the Franklin tournament with a lot of momentum, winning their last three games.

Parker Allman had two walks and scored two runs for the Hornets, while Camden Galindo scored two runs and one RBI. Cayden Mata had an RBI and a walk. Hayden Mooney finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Mason Mooney went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and a run.

Also for GHS, James Hamilton walked once, while Kody Hernandez scored two runs and walked twice. Gill Wallace was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and scored a run. Trevor Smith had a stolen base and a run.

The Franklin tournament is scheduled for Thursday, March 10, through Saturday, March 12. Results from the games will be in a future edition.
