TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

--The Gatesville Lions Club honored Jack Maxwell as their “Teacher of the Month.” Maxwell, the junior high athletic coordinator was retired after 36 years as a teacher and coach.

--Laramie Kettler, Caleb McKamie, and Jennifer Jackson scored the highest in the Accelerated Reading Program at Gatesville Intermediate School.

--The Gatesville Riding Club sweethearts were named as being Kim Miles and Randi Saunders. Kim was listed as the daughter of Keith and Lisa White. Randi was listed as the daughter of Shauna and David Saunders.

--Nancy McAnally and Rose Ella Place of the Coryell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary were planning to attend the Annual Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries Convention to be held in Austin.

--The American Legion Post 42 presented a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action flag to the Coryell County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Roger Faught.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

--Baylor University Regent Charles D. Wise was chosen to serve on Baylor’s Sesquicentennial Council to assist in developing a long-range plan for the world’s largest Baptist university.

--Jan Gardner of Jonesboro was selected the 1993 recipient of the Extension Homemaker $500 college scholarship. She was listed as the daughter of Robert and Vanda Gardner.

--Mr. and Mrs. Wes Scott were to be honored on their 50th anniversary. Wes Scott and the former Bertha Whatley were married June 10, 1943, by the minister of the 10th and Saunders Street Church of Christ.

--Gatesville’s Cody Lee, Coby Jones, and Steve Buckner had qualified for the Texas High School Rodeo Finals to be held in Abilene.

--Mikel G. Jones was named to the roll of Distinguished Students at Blinn College with a 3.38 grade point average.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

--Shawn Watts, the 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Watts, had been named the Gatesville Riding Club’s Sweetheart.

--Joe Kopec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kopec of Gatesville, was a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Texas A&M University.

--Theon Thetford was among former TSU athletes who had been selected for induction into the Tarleton Athletic Hall of Fame.

--Vicki Hollingsworth Casey graduated cum laude from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton. She is listed as the wife of Jerry Casey and as having two sons, Gregory and Patrick.

--County Judge Doug Smith was to be one of the featured speakers at the Regional Jail Administration Conference presented by Sam Houston State University.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

--In a business transaction, Gatesville attorneys Bill Hix and Don Cantrell purchased 50 percent of the stock in Brown Abstract Company from the owner T.V. Foote.

--John F. Post, editor of the Gatesville Messenger, was presented a certificate of appreciation from The National Guard Association of Texas.

--Jack Barton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dossey Barton, graduated from Texas Tech University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education.

--Bob Arnold, Jr. announced the purchase of the Burl Watts Car Wash and Conoco Service Station located at the southeast corner of Main St. and Lovers Lane.

--Ronnie Sullins, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Sullins, received a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science at Tarleton State College in Stephenville.
