Hester, Hunt erupt as Lady Hornets rout Mineral Wells

Madison Hester and Kagen Hunt had six hits each as Gatesville topped Mineral Wells 20-11 on March 7. It was the Lady Hornets’ third straight win after a tough stretch in the Franklin Tournament.

Gatesville (13-9) broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth, and six more in the seventh. The Lady Hornets notched 28 hits – 21 singles and 7 extra base hits.

Hunt tripled twice and doubled en route to 11 total bases in the win. She drove in six runs and stole a base.

Hester doubled twice, drove in a pair of runs, and picked up the pitching win.

Hunt came into the game hitting .297, and raised her average almost 100 points to .395. Hester’s night bumped her average from .391 to .462 on the season.

Every player in Gatesville’s lineup had at least one hit in the win. Ibet Carmona and Kinlee Gardner each had three hits and Rylee Glover, Brilee Ford, Lauren Stuard, and Grace Carothers had two hits apiece.

In the Franklin Tournament, the Lady Hornets dropped their first three games before bouncing back with two wins. They fell to Class 3A No. 7-ranked Coahoma 11-0, and Danbury 12-2 before losing a tough 2-0 decision to Bruceville-Eddy. A Gardner home run highlighted the loss to Danbury while Kallie Featherston scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run as pitcher in the loss to Bruceville-Eddy.

The Lady Hornets finished the tournament with wins over Jewett Leon, 13-2, and Navasota, 8-1. Against Leon, they had six hits but drew 10 walks while striking out just once. They had nine hits in the win over Navasota including a triple from Gardner and doubles from Ford and Hunt.

Featherston got the win over Navasota thanks to a three-inning, three-hit, one run performance. She is 7-0 in her 11 starts this season and has struck out 45 batters in 43 innings pitched.

Gatesville is scheduled to start district play March 17, at home against Robinson.
