Former Messenger news editor bids farewell with last column
Former Gatesville Messenger news editor and assistant publisher Larry Kennedy offered his gratitude and affection to the people, city and county he covered for more than 20 years with his final column, which can be found on Page 4 of this edition.
Kennedy, who served as news editor and assistant publisher from 1995 until 2017, continued to contribute regular columns for The Messenger following his departure, despite receiving a cancer diagnosis one week into retirement.
Kennedy and his wife, Evelyn, moved to San Angelo following his retirement and have since relocated to Odessa. Through the cancer treat ments and recent household moves, Kennedy continued to serve The Messenger as a guest columnist.
Following a string of surgeries, hospitalizations and rounds of chemotherapy, Kennedy is currently waiting to find out if he is healthy enough to continue with another full dose of chemo.
He has decided now is the time to bid adieu to the people and community he served here.
