Fallen officers honored

Correctional officers with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice recognized fallen officers during a recent memorial outside of the Hilltop unit in Gatesville. Above, the traditional “missing man table” ceremony is performed. The table, seated for one (symbolizing the fallen officer) includes a white tablecloth, in honor of the purity of their intentions to the job; a single red rose, representing the offi cer’s sacrifice; a yellow ribbon; a slice of lemon on the bread plate, standing for the bitter fate of the fallen; salt sprinkled on the bread plate, symbolic of the countless fallen tears of families as they mourn the deceased; an inverted glass, representing the fact that the fallen cannot partake; the Bible, representing the strength gained through faith; and a lit candle, reminiscent of the light of hope which lives in our hearts to illuminate the officer’s way home.
