Daniel Boone has ties to Gatesville
As children, many of us heard the story about famed frontiersman Daniel Boone. Now, a piece of his folklore can be included in the history of Gatesville.
Local historian, Sherry Lawrence, became interested in the story after discovering a wrinkled note that her mother had written years ago concerning Daniel Boone’s great-granddaughter being buried in Gatesville’s City Cemetery. After seemingly countless hours of detailed research, Lawrence, a member of the Coryell County Genealogical Society, wrote an article about the Boone descendant for the society’s quarterly, Coryell Kin.
Daniel Boone’s great-granddaughter, Henrietta Maria White, was born in 1836, in Sumter County, South Carolina. Her father was Jesse White and her mother was Elizabeth Levica Boone White. As a girl, Henrietta attended a girls school in Marion, Alabama. In 1855, when she was about 19 yearsold, she married Dr. James M. Longmire in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. After living for a brief period in Louisiana, the Longmire family migrated to Texas sometime prior to 1867.
