Coryell County 4-H News | Food Challenge | Trap, Clay shoot

Posted

Braving the cold morning, eighty-nine youth competed in American Trap and eight-three youth shot in the Sporting Clay division of the Coryell 4-H Gun Club Qualifier Event held November 19th at the Waco Skeet and Trap Club.  Placing for the locals were Dutch Nielson who won the Senior Sporting Clay division and Colton Christian who took first in Senior American Trap.

The event, which was hosted by our county 4-H shooting sports club, was both a fundraiser for the club and a qualifying event for youth to compete at Fort Worth, Houston, Heart ‘O Texas and San Antonio Livestock Expo Shooting Sports competitions. The 4-H Gun Club leaders Hugh Nielsen, Jeff Pruitt, Joe and Carrie Jones, and Agent Robert Ferguson, along with many volunteers, coordinated the event.

The 4-H Shooting Sports project is another opportunity for youth to learn how to load and shoot a variety of firearms, proper maintenance of firearms, proper safety procedures in handling and shooting, and about shooting sports competitions.  Leaders coach youth in rifle, shotgun, and pistol disciplines.  The 4-H Gun Club meets the third Wednesday of each month and practices on the second Saturday of the month. Congratulations to the club on an outstanding event!

The Coryell County 4-H Food Challenge and Food Show was held November 21st at the Gatesville Intermediate School. Nine Food Challenge Teams and one Food Show participant competed vying for a trip to the District Food Contest which will be held December 14th in Belton. In the food and nutrition project, youth learn kitchen and cooking safety, how to prepare nutritious meals and snacks, and meal ideas to reduce your risk of disease. Learning experiences focus on nutrition, food purchasing, food preparation, food safety, and related careers. In the food challenge contest, youth are given a main ingredient and then must work together in a three- or four-man team to devise and prepare a recipe. They may add ingredients of their choosing and then they present their dish to a panel of judges, noting how it was prepared, safety practices, nutrition information and how they worked together to make their recipe. The top two teams from each age division will represent Coryell County at the District competition. Results from the County Food Contests are as follows:
