City delays house demo order

Posted

A house at 2006 Bridge Street in Gatesville that has been ruled a substandard structure may still face the wrecking ball, but its fate has been delayed at least temporarily because the property has changed hands.

Previously owned by Christopher C. Richardson, who also owns property nearby, the house was sold to someone else and has a sign in the yard noting it is for sale.

"I called the number (on the sign) to find out what's going on and Josiah Wilson answered," said Gatesville City Manager Bill Parry. Wilson, who lives outside the area, "considers himself a house flipper and bought the house sight unseen," Parry said. "He has expressed regrets about purchasing the house but said he is committed to repairing it."

Wilson will have about two weeks to determine if fixing the house is worth the time, effort and expense.

"He said he would be present at the March 22 (City Council) meeting and will present a plan to fix the structure," Parry said. "If Mr. Wilson doesn't show up with plans to fix the house, my recommendation is to notify him that he will need to demolish the structure."

"This is beginning to unfold like we feared it would," said Mayor Gary Chumley.

"We need to be sure it doesn't get away from us," Parry said.
