Gatesville City Council members honored the legacy of longtime Gatesville pastor and school board member the late Rev. Dr. Willie Clarke with a proclamation declaration and signing Tuesday during the council’s regular meeting.

The Proclamation, which was a collaboration between Gatesville Independent School District and the City of Gatesville, recognizes Sept. 9, 2020, as Dr. Willie Clarke Day and serves to celebrate Clarke’s accomplishments and decades of service to the Gatesville community. Sept. 9 would have been Clarke’s 72nd birthday.

The late reverend passed away Oct. 24, 2013.

His record of service to the Gatesville community is extensive.

Clarke served as the senior pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Gatesville for 20 years, where he was known as a “powerful preacher with a fantastic singing voice,” as stated on the city’s proclamation.
