Posted

A work day will be held Saturday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at Wood Cemetery. A meeting will commence following lunch at noon.

Be sure to bring gloves, hoes, shovels, lawnmowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and wheel barrows to help with the cleanup.

If you are unable to do any work, simply stopping by with water would be enough. If you are not able to attend, consider donating to help upkeep the cemetery. Mail all donations to Wood Cemetery Association, attention Melinda Burke, 430 Old Georgetown Rd., Gatesville, TX 76528.

For more information contact Melinda Burke, secretary and treasurer, at 254-865-2085 or 254-223-3546.

Wood Cemetery, believed to have been named for noted pioneer educator D.R. Wood, was established with the 1858 burial of Sarah E. Shipman, wife of prominent local rancher John K. Shipman. More than 20 additional burials were recorded before John Shipman deeded 11.5 acres for a cemetery, church, and school in 1877.
