TWENTY YEARS AGO

(2001)

                --Kenneth Smedegard modeled the type of garments typically worn in Afghanistan when he was stationed there from 1964 to 1967. While in Afghanistan, Smedegard met and married his wife, Louise, who was a secretary to the American ambassador.

                --The Gatesville Exchange Club honored Than Dossman and Cayla Chambers as the "Students of the Month" for November.

                --The Gatesville Civic Theatre Association had scheduled auditions for their spring production of "Don't Drink the Water."

                --Kitti Harris was honored on her first birthday with a party given by her parents, Ronnie and Vonny Harris, at the home of Dennis and Nancy Harris.

                --Lanelle Hopson Petty, with her fiddle, will accompanied the Gatesville High School Varsity Choir on "Christmas in the Straw" during the Gatesville ISD Choral Department's free concert.

                --Coryell County residents were invited to "Meet the Sheriff” at Andy's Restaurant in Gatesville. Sheriff Roger Faught planned to answer questions and concerns regarding law enforcement issues that affect senior citizens.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

(1991)

                --Thelma Jones of Gatesville was the lucky recipient of the $500 "Spend Christmas at Home" award given by the Chamber of Commerce. Beverly Waters won a second prize of $250 in Christmas vouchers.

                --Mr. and Mrs. Royal A. Hill were honored on their 50th wedding anniversary with an informal reception in their home in Flat. Royal Hill and the former Ida Mae Sherwood were married in the Browns Creek community with Rev. W.B. Keener officiating.

                --Six of the newest election candidates were Joan Blanchard, Hy Davidson, John Carlton, Larry McDonald, Mike Copeland, and Shawn Camp. The candidates planned to run in upcoming party primaries slated for March.

                --Carroll P. Smith was awarded the Golden Trowel Award at a special Masonic ceremony held in Gatesville. The ceremony, held at the Gatesville Masonic Lodge, awarded a worthy lodge member for continual service to and for the lodge.

                --Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Neim Shelton, son of Jim and Velva D. Shelton, completed the Basic Aviation Structural Mechanic Course and was promoted to his present rank. He was a 1983 graduate of Gatesville High School.

                --Gatesville High School’s head basketball coaches Tommy Fadal and Guy Dean were scheduled to be the hosts for the Gatesville Lions Club Classic. Eight teams made up the tournament.

FORTY YEARS AGO

(1981)

                --Pvt. Kenneth W. Cline had graduated as an armor reconnaissance specialist under the One Station Unit Training Program at the U.S. Armor School, Fort Knox, Ky.

                --Three members of the Gatesville High School choir—Kimberly Keech, Janet Farr and Monty Hudspeth—sang Christmas songs for Gatesville Lions Club members during their December meeting. Accompanying the vocalists was Greta White, pianist.

                --Army Staff Sgt. Carlos E. Johnson, Jr. took part in a training exercise entitled Bright Star, designed to test U.S. ability to deploy troops in the Middle East.

                --B.M. Paul Jr. of Gatesville, had recently completed work on a sound recording of popular country entertainer Willie Nelson's song, "Pick Up the Tempo." The young musician, a 1980 graduate of Gatesville High School, was attending South Plains College in Levelland.

                --James W. McDonald of Gatesville had been named deputy grand master for the 69th Masonic District of Texas. Active In Masonry since 1958, McDonald served as master of Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 197 in 1974-75.

                --The Gatesville Jaycees had elected Gail Ussery as their new vice president. Ussery was manager of Gatesville Cable TV.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

(1971)

                --Roy K. Robb, age 28, of Gatesville, a former caseworker at the State Schools for Boys, had been appointed to the new position of probation officer for the 52nd Judicial District.

                --Donald W. Cantrell was congratulated by Judge Byron McClellan after the judge had administered the attorney's oath to the new Gatesville lawyer in a special session of 52nd District Court.

                --Hiram A. (Hy) Davidson, a 43-year-old Gatesville rancher, announced he was a candidate for county commissioner in Precinct 3. Davidson was to be opposing Roland Wright.

                --Mrs. Victor (Bobbie) Harper of Oglesby, who had been associated with Federal Land Bank associations in the area for 26 years, announced that she was retiring.

                --Lynn Barnett, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Barnett, had scored his first deer kill of the season with a respectable 7-point buck he bagged on the Jack Saunders place.

                --Mrs. Ella Edwards was honored on her 90th birthday with a celebration held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.A. Beverly of Route 4, Gatesville.
