Whatever happened to….

20 YEARS AGO

(2002)

— Don Skiles was elected president of the newly formed Gatesville Economic Development Corporation. Skiles had spearheaded the effort for the creation of the corporation.

— Ruth Jones and Laura White represented the Gatesville Exchange Club at the National Exchange Club Convention held it Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Gatesville club received the highest honor, called the Big “E” award.

— Charles D. Jageler American Legion Post 42 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new bingo hall. The new hall included an area for non-smoking patrons.

— Janna Kay Herridge, daughter of Bill and Diane Herridge, was named to the Texas All-State Academic Team by the Texas Association of Community Colleges.

— Victoria Cummings, Mendie Moore, Bruce Timmons, Patty Kent, Karen Finch, Leigh Tartaglia, and Patti Patterson were among those “pinned” during a graduation ceremony at the Central Texas College Nursing Department.

—      Tiny Mister Shivaree, David Lee, flexed his muscles at the first “Back-to-School Fashion Show” sponsored by the Texas Cooperative Extension office and the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce.

30 YEARS AGO

(1992)

— Plez Todd was honored by the Gatesville Masonic Lodge where he was presented a 50-year service award by fellow Lodge member Jack Hopkins.

— The Baylor Football Caravan visited Gatesville as part of its tour through rural Central Texas. Among those travelling on the caravan was Gatesville’s native son Cotton Davidson, who was one of several BU coaches taking part in the tour.

— Contract workers were busy removing asbestos insulation from the walls in the basement of the post office in Gatesville. The removal of the asbestos was expected to take about a week.

— Jody Cummings graduated from Tarleton State University receiving a bachelor’s degree in general business and marketing. His was the grandson of M.K. (Jiggs) and Cleo Marshall and Josie Cummings.

— Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jackie L. Ford, son of William M. and Alpha A. Ford, had been deployed aboard the destroyer USS Briscoe for six months to the Red Sea.

—      Local golfer Mark Healer came up with sub-70 scores for two straight rounds, giving him the outright title at Gatesville Country Club’s 1-Man Championship.

40 YEARS AGO

(1982)

— Clovis King of Gatesville received the Faithful Service Medal. King, a veteran of 22 years in the State Guard, was a platoon sergeant in Co. C of Gividen’s battalion.

— Dallas Cowboy Coach Tom Landry was presented with a bronze bust, “The Gentle Winner,” created by Gatesville sculptor Don Hunt.

— Anamelia Voss, daughter of Barry and Judy Voss of Gatesville, was honored on her first birthday with a party at the home of her grandparents, Mavis and Charlie Ballard.

— Vocational agriculture teachers Raby Smalley of Jonesboro and Harry Grmela of Gatesville were attending a workshop on electric motors conducted Waco.

— News from Flat announced that a family was visiting in the community from Amsterdam. Sjoerd, Willy and Ingrid Boars of Amsterdam, Holland, were visiting in the James Henderson home.

—      Linda Gise, Lera Lam, Portia McKown, Kathy Turner, and Laura White were new initiates of the Gamma Alpha Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma International Society.

50 YEARS AGO

(1972)

— Mack Morris and James Dixon were presented with life memberships in the Scottish Rite. Morris and Dixon had both had the honor of being a knight commander of the court.

— Gene Holder and Earl Higginbotham had written a book about Coach Lloyd Mitchell and his famous spur collection. The article was called “Spurs and Straps Forever” and it had appeared in “Horse & Rider” magazine.

— E. Dale Bohne was awarded a degree in welding technology from Texas State Technical Institute in Waco. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bohne.

— Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zeigler were honored with a reception in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Pruitt. Mr. Zeigler had recently been appointed as superintendent of the Gatesville Public Schools.

— Mrs. Inez Ingram, owner of Kut ‘n Kurl Beauty Shop, announced that Tana Draper had joined her, Linda Lovelace, and Brenda Alsup on the staff.

—Stanley Kopec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kopec of Gatesville and who was in Baylor University’s ROTC unit, had finished six weeks of training at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.
