TWENTY YEARS AGO

(2001)

                -- Renovations were underway at Kalyn-Siebert to streamline the manufacturing process that should increase productivity at the Gatesville plant.

                -- Laura White was recognized as a "Distinguished Club Secretary" by the National Exchange Club. She received a certificate of appreciation from Ruth Jones, Gatesville club president.

                -- The Community College Business Officers (CCBO) recognized Robert C. Farrell as the 2001 Outstanding Chief Business Officer for Region 7.

                -- The children of Lloyd and Madge Mitchell helped celebrate Gatesville's spur capital designation. Displaying a framed copy of the state proclamation designating the city the Spur Capital of Texas were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Mitchell of Stanton; Mary Catherine Mitchell of Gatesville; Buddy Mitchell of Arizona; and Charlotte Wetzel of Goldthwaite.

                -- Plans for widening Farm to Market (FM) 107 through Eagle Springs were moving forward with approval of the environmental impact study, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

                -- Officers of the Gatesville High School Choir Booster Club were Kimberly Doyle, co-president; Gabrielle Gonzales, secretary; Jeanne Griffith, co-president; Kathy Diaz, treasurer; and Dolores Lobo, publicity.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

(1991)

                -- Senior Brooke Gallier, daughter of Rick Gallier and Lin Gallier, was chosen Homecoming Queen during halftime of the football game.

                -- Dora Jean Patterson Dyson was named recipient of the Norris Graves Award at the GHS Ex-Students Association banquet.

                -- Henry E. Brown was honored after retiring from M ATES. Brown, a member of the National Guard since August of 1956, had worked at MATES since December 1977. He began his career there as a general mechanic and finished as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairman.

                -- Larry McDonald was sworn in as Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3, by County Judge John Hull. McDonald was appointed by the commissioner’s court to fill the unexpired term of Bob Acord.

                -- Moody Courtney of Jonesboro was re-elected to the Hamilton/Coryell Soil and Water Conservation District board of directors. Courtney represented Zone 3 of the district.

                -- Reverend John Carroll assumed the duties of pastor of Live Oak Baptist Church, replacing Dr. Truman Turk, who resigned. Dr. Turk was named Director of Missions for the Abilene Baptist Association.

FORTY YEARS AGO

(1981)

                -- Texas State Guard Lt. Chris Fruge of Gatesville outlined a plan for a mock disaster during a preparation session at the National Guard Armory.

                -- Melanie Hunt, 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hunt, beamed when she was chosen Stingette of the Week.

                -- Mrs. Nelda P. Wolfe of Gatesville racked up another in a series of awards as chief program assistant with the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service.

                -- Dori Jander, eight-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Jander, fared well at the Heart of Texas Fair in Waco, bringing home 14 prize-winning ribbons.

                -- Coryell County Farm Bureau President Dennis Rabbe presented a certificate to Fort Gates Fireman Dewain Farris for completing the Firefighter 1 course.

                -- Otis Helms, Levita dairyman, emerged as producer of the champion bale at the annual Coryell County Hay Show.  It was picked from a field of 50 entries.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

(1971)

                -- Johnny Davis became the first black law enforcement officer in Coryell County's history when he was named a patrolman on Gatesville's police force.

                -- Lewis Hunter of Sweetwater was to be the new minister of the West Main Church of Christ in Gatesville.

                -- Sgt. Ronald K. Schaub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schaub of Rt. 4, Gatesville, had returned from a ten-month tour of duty in Vietnam. He was stationed at Binh Thuy.

                -- Mrs. Kinard (Ernestine) Huckabee, assistant secretary of the Gatesville Savings and Loan Association, had been appointed a member of the Gatesville Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

                -- Mayor Bob Miller announced the appointment of Sam L. Adams and Sotero Gomez as additional members of the Gatesville Public Library's board of directors.

                -- Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Reed celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home in the Mound community. Mrs. Reed, the former Bertha Turpin, and Alex J. Reed were married in Waco on Oct. 28, 1921.
