Pearl News Tribute to Kay Pruett

Posted

Everyone has been asking about the very famous Pearl personality, Kay Pruett. She even has a dog named Pearl. Kay has recently had hip surgery, but she is back home with rehab and doing well. In fact, she’s back to her old self. Seems like all our visitors want to know more about Kay, so we thought we would tell you little about her and her family.

Kay, her son Russell and his wife, Michelle, have been instrumental in the care and maintenance of the Pearl Community for many years. Kay, Russell and Michelle have been caretakers of the Pearl Cemetery, the Pearl Cottage Bookstore, the Pearl Community Fellowship Church, and the Pearl Community Center and have taken great pride in taking care of all of these precious Pearl locales. They were instrumental in turning the "little rock house” on the Community Center grounds into the Pearl Cottage Bookstore and Resale Shop. A lot of hours went into the building and setting up of the bookshelves and placing the 6,000-plus books into those shelves. The Book Cottage, a charity house, has been in operation for thirteen years since.

Kay, Russell, and Michelle were also instrumental in reopening the Pearl Methodist Church as the Pearl Community Fellowship Church. Many hours went into repairs, cleaning, gardening, and turning a storage building into a fellowship-coffee-snack area with kitchen and bathroom facilities. Additionally, Kay is “The Caretaker” of the cemetery. All calls about lots, burials and funerals go to Kay. She has marked the graves/lots and was instrumental in writing the Pearl Cemetery Book. Another big venture of Kay’s is that she carried on her mother’s love of growing succulents and plants. She has sold hundreds of those plants during the many plant sales she has had and then donated that money to the Book Cottage.

Additionally, Kay and her “sidekick” and partner in the Pearl Cottage Bookstore, Linda Ray, were determined to keep the Pearl Flea Markets alive, taking it over when Joy Bates retired from the job in 2007. Kay should be given the keys to the town of Pearl… well she already has all the keys to the town of Pearl. Actually, Kay deserves a crown. Not a day goes by that we don’t think about Russell and all he did. You cannot look around Pearl and not see the evidence of his handiwork. He is dearly missed! Thank you, Kay, Russell, and Michelle for your many years of service to Pearl.

IN OTHER NEWS

Saturday, May 7, the Pearl Cottage Book Store and Resale Shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Surrounding the bookstore will be our monthly Pearl Flea Market with Junk-In-Your-Trunk. You can bring a trailer full of treasures or a trunk full with the rule of First Come-First Park on the Community Center grounds. There will be a small fee of $5 charged which goes toward the maintenance and upkeep of the Pearl Community Center building and grounds. Let’s grow this every first Saturday event (except for September when we will be open the second Saturday) into the most popular flea market event in the area.

We’re inviting anyone to bring their fresh vegetables and/or fruits—only no “already prepared” food items as there will be food in the Pearl Community Center kitchen for sale to benefit the center. If you would like to advertise your business, bring some business cards and join us.

We always have someone interested in real estate, so agents in the area are welcome to set up a booth.

People are always asking for recommendations for people who can clear a lot, dig a tank or well, or build a fence. For only $5 a booth, you can get your message out.

If any bands would like to come and play under the pavilion or on the stage, you are welcome. Come and spend the night on the grounds. RV spaces are available. Sites are also available for longer stays. Full hook-up pull-throughs. 30 AMPS-$20 per night; 50 AMPS-$25 per night.

For more information on renting trailer spaces or the Community Center itself, call 254-223-0621. Pearl Book Store Contact Numbers are 254-865-9282 or 254-865-5864.
