TWENTY YEARS AGO

(2002)

Gatesville Junior High School Principal Bobby Cole was named the “Outstanding Principal of the Year” for the Region 12 Education Service Center.

The new $765,000 Gatesville Public Library was under construction across from the Gatesville City Hall.

Navy Seaman John B. McMasters, son of Linda D. Miller of Gatesville, was taking part in a community relations project in Guam. McMasters was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk.

Katie Humburg and Susan Ussery of Gatesville Florist had completed two weeks of instruction at the Benz School of Floral Design at Texas A&M in College Station.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

(1992)

Bill Cole was sworn in as a new school board member to serve the remainder of the unexpired term left vacant by the resignation of Linda Dulin.

Coy Chambers, Coryell County 4-H Council Chairman, had attended the 4-H Council Leadership Institute held at Riverside Farm near Hamilton.

Tommy Ray, Jr., age 16, son of Ruby Pauline Manning of Gatesville, attended the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. He was sponsored by the Gatesville Lions Club.

Josh and Roxie Logan were celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Joshua Willis Logan and Roxie Lena Dorsey were married July 9, 1927, at the Friendship Baptist Church.

FORTY YEARS AGO

(1982)

Three contestants were competing for the title of Miss Fort Gates. The young ladies were Kelly Herring, Dondi Bates and Wylanta Taylor. Kelly Herring was chosen as the winner.

Herman Haase of Jonesboro had grown a radish that was one- and three-quarter pounds and measured a foot-long in length. He never had seen a radish that large before.

Bobbie Weaver was installed as worshipful master, succeeding Ronnie Bruton at the Maples Masonic Lodge No. 791 in Flat.

Leslie Chandler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Chandler, was one of the delegates attending the Future Homemakers of America leadership meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

(1972)

Steve Hays, age 23, was appointed as the new B team football coach at the Gatesville High School. The addition of Hays had completed the Hornet coaching staff for 1972-73.

Desmond Lawrence joined the sales force at Powell Supply Company. Lawrence had been in the wholesale meat business but had recently sold it.

Army Lt. Col. Thomas H. Spence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Spence, had graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks.

Marine Lance Corporal Denver B. Cockrell was in the South China Sea with the Anti-Submarine Warfare Group Three about the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga.
