Whatever happened to…

TWENTY YEARS AGO (2003)

                --Joy Cole, the 12-year-old daughter of Randy and Kathy Cole of Gatesville, had been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Pre-Teen Pageant to be held in Dallas.

                --Former Gatesville City Councilwoman Lucile Plane was honored at her final meeting as a council member. She had served since 1996 and was awarded a plaque by Mayor Daren Moore.

                --Alma Bessie Clary of Gatesville was feted with a 100th birthday celebration at the Gatesville Housing Authority. The party was hosted by her children, Dorothy Barrington, Billy Clary, and Bobbie Ferrell.

                --Raymond Inman, a senior at Gatesville High, had composed a number, “Summer Serenade” that was to be performed at the Texas Music Teachers Association meeting in Arlington.

                --Matthew Vandagriff was named the recipient of the Perry Academic Award during the Mississippi College Days Convocation. The award was given each year in the field of religion.

THIRTY YEARS AGO (1993)

                --Becky Barnhill, a senior at Gatesville High School, emerged as state champion at the UIL 1993 state academic meet in Austin. She became only the second Gatesville High student to win a state literary championship.

                --Two members of the Gatesville City Council attended their final meeting. Councilmen Cronje Swindall and Ken Poston did not seek re-election. Gatesville mayor Wyllis Ament presented both with certificates.

                --Mrs. Elsa Rabbe was honored on her 90th birthday with a celebration at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Berry.

                --Gavin Massingill, a graduating senior at Gatesville High School, was honored with a party at Ryan’s Steakhouse in Waco. Special guests were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Massingill.

                --Navy Airman Recruit Derek S. Amberson, son of James and Linda Greene of Gatesville, had graduated from the Aviation Structural Mechanic Hydraulics Maintenance Course.

FORTY YEARS AGO (1983)

                --Diana Lynn Smith graduated with honors from Tarleton State University. The 1979 graduate of Gatesville High School was listed as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Neuman of Coryell City.

                --President Bob Bates reported that the Gatesville’s Lions Club cleared $591 from its mop and broom sale conducted over the city.

                --Brett Gilbreath, son of Wes Gilbreath of Gatesville, cleared 13-6 to tie for third in the Class 5A pole vault competition at the state UIL track and field meet held in Austin.

                --Brad Harris of Gatesville received the Time Insurance Company’s President’s Award in recognition of “exceptional performance in life sales and customer service.”

                --Roger Miller, a soon to be senior, had been chosen president of the Gatesville High School’s student council for the 1983-84 school year.

FIFTY YEARS AGO (1973)

                --Phillip Lee Williamson, son of Rev. and Mrs. Lee Roy Williamson, had been notified that he had been accepted into Baylor University’s honors program.

                --Accepting awards at the Girl’s State Track and Field Meet in Austin were Carliss McNeeley, Carla Winters, Judy Kafer, and Debbie Dickerman.

                --Three Gatesville High School seniors, Bobby Jones, Billy Bartlett, and Mike Magee were honored with a wiener roast held at the Williams’ ranch.

                --A record-breaking 21 entries in Coryell County’s pecan queen contest promised to make the competition interesting. The contest was sponsored by the Coryell County Pecan Growers Association.

                -- Susan Perryman Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Perryman, received a Bachelor of Science degree in social work at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
