New rules for Cross Country/Walking Track area

The Gatesville Independent School District Board of Trustees met on Monday, March 25, and discussed several issues pertaining to the district, including new rules that need to be implemented at the GISD Cross Country/Walking Track area.

GISD Superintendent Dr. Barrett Pollard related to the board that most citizens use the walking track appropriately and cause no issues. However, there are some instances when people loiter around the track, have unleashed dogs, or walk right through a group of students who are on the track for PE classes, athletics, or science courses.

“Recently, we had one gentleman who was loitering and, when asked to leave, cursed at a staff member,” Dr. Pollard said.

According to Dr. Pollard, several signs are going to be made and posted around the walking track with a list of rules that are to be followed on the GISD property. The Walking Track Rules include: 1. All dogs must be on a leash. 2. Pick up after your dog. 3. No loitering. 4. If students are present, avoid their immediate area.

In addition to the signs, Dr. Pollard said that they are going to have the school police officers on duty to patrol the walking track area more frequently and to encourage teachers who periodically use that area to request the school police officer to accompany them.

“We hope that these rules resolve our issues, so we do not have to place additional restrictions on the track,” Pollard said. “The Cross Country/Walking Track has been a great addition for the school district and the community. We have a large group of citizens who use the walking track frequently. I am so pleased at how many people take advantage of it,” he said.
