Moving toward completion

Crews are working feverishly to complete the new Gatesville Elementary School in time for the Aug. 24 start of the school year. The second and third grade wings should be ready by Aug. 17, while the fi rst grade wing will be a few weeks behind that.

Jessie Dunbar has best shooting score

Jessie Dunbar saved her best for the biggest stage. A freshman at Gatesville High School, the 14-year-old Dunbar shot her best score at the Civilian Marksmanship Program National Matches held recently at Camp Perry, Ohio. She used an AR-15 to shoot a score of 452 with fi ve Xs out of a possible 500 with 50 Xs. “I did really good this year,” Dunbar said. “I was off a couple of days, but I shot my best-ever score.”

Edmiston commits to University of Tulsa

By C.J. BERRYMAN

Gatesville senior linebacker Cooper Edmiston has announced his intent to accept an offer extended last month by the University of Tulsa to play football for the Golden Hurricane. Edmiston comes from a strong pedigree of athletes, as his older brother and sister— Cole and Evan, respectively— were standouts for the Hornets, as well. Cole currently plays football at Baylor University, and Evan will begin her freshman year of college at BU this fall.

Cockrell retires as city recreational manager

By C.J. BERRYMAN

Sam Cockrell, longtime resident of Gatesville, served his last day as the city recreational manager on Friday after 20-plus years on the job. While enjoying the shade at a picnic table underneath a tree at the Little League Complex on Tuesday, Cockrell said it was time to step into retirement. “I feel great,” Cockrell said about his fi nal week of duty. “I had a good run. I have been blessed.” Cockrell has served as city recreational manager many years before it even became a full-time paid position back in October of 1994, when he retired from his previous job as a manager of shoppettes at Fort Hood. It was a voluntary position prior to that, but Cockrell was still happy to do it.
