Supreme Court ruling yields fi rst license issued here

The fi rst marriage licenses to same sex couples were issued Monday in Coryell County, following last week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized same sex marriages in all 50 states. County Clerk Barbara Simpson confi rmed one marriage license was issued Monday in Gatesville and one in Copperas Cove. “I took an oath to uphold the laws of the United States of America and that’s what the law says,” Simpson said. Simpson added that her offi ce will treat same sex couples with the same respect as anyone else seeking a marriage license.

Night-time construction on Gatesville’s Main Street has been a familiar sight for the past few months. The project includes the reconstruction and resurfacing of the roadway from FM 116  o Texas Highway 36. Slowed by the rain, the project is nearing completion. Jones retiring after 26 years in education

After 21 years of coaching, Wendell Jones has decided it is time to hang up the whistle. Jones will be retiring from his post as head tennis coach at Gatesville, and he will also be retiring from teaching Spanish, a subject he has taught in every one of his 26 years in the profession. Jones began coaching and teaching in Bremond, where he served one year as an assistant in track and fi eld, baseball and volleyball, and he was the Lady Tigers’ junior high basketball coach. After that one year in Bremond, Jones moved to Gatesville for five years in what ended up being the fi rst of two tenures. He taught Spanish and did not coach during that first term.

Keeton, Vaden added to Little League Wall of Honor

By C.J. BERRYMAN

Last Saturday, longtime Gatesville residents Gary Keeton and Billy Vaden were recognized in appreciation for their years of outstanding service and devotion to the Gatesville Recreational Department. Both Keeton and Vaden were honored with plaques, which were added to the Wall of Honor at the Little League baseball and softball complex. Sam Cockrell, city recreational manager, said Keeton and Vaden have been offering their services to the Little League for a very long time, and that both men were more than deserving of the honor.
