Volunteer takes on cemetery

Billy Edwards, who taught construction for the Windham School District, moved back to his hometown of Gatesville after retiring. With nothing but time on his hands, Edwards started repairing and cleaning gravemarkers at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Since he lives across the street, he can go early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Come January, a new regime will take over in the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office and the commissioners’ court will have two new faces. That was already known before Tuesday, but the new elected officials list was virtually finalized in the Republican run-off.

The awards banquets that come at the end of every sports season is a time that comes with a number of struggles, as athletes and coaches alike say their goodbyes for the year. Such was the case to an even greater extent than average for the Gatesville Hornet powerlifting team at its annual banquet Monday evening.

Every high school athlete dreams, on some level, of moving on to play in college and on Tuesday afternoon, four Gatesville High School seniors made their plans to do just that official with a signing ceremony led by athletic director Kyle Cooper. “These guys have an opportunity to go on and represent Gatesville High School, to represent their families and to better themselves,” Cooper said. “I’m very proud of these young people.”
